Open Space
The theme of this Open Space session is “Being a CIMI: Issues, Challenges, Strengths and Hopes”. Within this theme, participants will be invited to collectively explore whatever it is they really care about, and to create new possibilities and understandings with each other. Instead of using an agenda determined by someone else, open space uses the creative capacity of individuals and the group to explore issues of importance to the group, and to develop new possibilities together.
What does a “good” relationship with parents look like?
There is now substantial evidence that the relationship between parents and workers has a significant impact on outcomes for both children and families. However, what constitutes a “good” relationship is not always well understood. This paper presents the results of a literature review that explored current research and evidence about the skills, knowledge and understandings of people working with families that influence the effectiveness of their relationship with families – particularly those who are vulnerable or in distress.
Alice Campbell
Alice is a CIMI, Registered Nurse, and current President of IAIM Australia. She has almost 20 years experience working in community organisations with families in distress in both front-line and senior management roles. As well as volunteering her time with IAIM, Alice currently works as a consultant to a number of community and government organisations designing, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and services for children and families. She is also as a part-time Research Officer with the Institute of Child Protection Studies.
Tai Chi for the CIMI

"Infant Massage and Babies with Additional Needs". Julianne Castle and Helen Stone will share case studies of children they have seen, and the specific challenges these presented for baby massage. They will also discuss some of the possible difficulties that a child may present with, in an infant massage class, and look at some strategies that a CIMI can use to deal with these, with emphasis on assisting both the child, and the parent.
Julianne Castle and Helen Stone are (specialising in paediatrics) Occupational Therapists who have worked for many years with children with a range of medical and developmental issues and concerns. In our current roles, as Therapists at Royal North Shore Hospital, we see a range of babies with a variety of conditions.
